Second Caliph remembered

LAHORE – The new year of the Hijri calendar began from 1st of Muharram (Friday) with religious solemnity as several meetings, seminars and rallies were staged by different religious organisations.

Various seminars and meetings were held to pay homage to Second Caliph Hazrat Umar Farooq (رضى الله تعالى عنه) to mark his martyrdom day on 1st of Muharram while others were held to pay homage to the martyrs of Karbala and family of Hazrat Imam Hussain (رضى الله تعالى عنه) who laid down their lives on 10th of Muharram.

Speakers at a seminar titled “Farooq (رضى الله تعالى عنه) and Hussain (رضى الله تعالى عنه) seminar” at Lahore press club organized by Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), paid glowing tributes to Hazrat Umar Farooq (رضى الله تعالى عنه) and Hazrat Imam Hussain (رضى الله تعالى عنه), urging the Muslims to follow in their footsteps to enforce Islam at individual and collective levels, without which Islam could never be practiced as a system of life and would reduced to the level of a mere faith.

The seminar was chaired by ASWJ Lahore coordination committee chairman Haroon Rasheed Bhatti, while other speakers included ASWJ leader Ghulam Rasool Shah, Masroor Nawaz Jhangvi, ASWJ Balochistan leader RAfiq Mengal, Ahle Hadith leader Imtiaz Ahmad Mujahid, Tehrik Insaf leader Imtiaz Mehmood Sheikh, JI leader Amirul Azeem, Maulana Maqbool Farooqi, Adeel Ghumman, Hafiz Rafiq Mujahid, Hafiz Nadeem Ahmad and others.

Haroon Rasheed Bhatti said Hazrat Umar (رضى الله تعالى عنه) set unbeatable examples of management of state affairs, good governance, record expansion of Muslim state and the exemplary prosperity of even the common man by just distribution of wealth which was evident from the fact that recipients of state support and zakat became non-existent.

He said Khalifah himself lived with simplicity like common people but his strict administration was such that crimes had vanished and enemies of Islam used to fear even by hearing his name. Citing Christian historians, he said, they had stated that if Islam had another Umar Farooq (رضى الله تعالى عنه) Muslim state would have spread all over the globe and not a single person would have remained non-Muslim.

Masroor Nawaz Jhangvi said Hazrat Imam Hussain (رضى الله تعالى عنه) laid down his life and those of his companions to protect Islamic system. He warned that a particular group was involved in Karachi bloodbath and killings of Ulema and seminary students. He asked why government only bothered about peace during Muharram but kept sleeping all through the year, adding that if the system of state enforced by the grandparent of Hazrat Imam Hussain (رضى الله تعالى عنه) was implemented in the country, lasting peace would be ensured for the rest of our lives.

Later, the participants of the seminar staged a demonstration outside the press club to condemn what they called the discrimination against one school of thought during Muharram and demanded that sentiments of majority must not be hurt for the sake of minority, while the days of Khulafa-e-Rashedin should be observed at state level with public holidays.
